This is going to be a short, but sweet review on our trip to El Patron. 1. Our waitress was absolutely clueless about the menu. She didn't know what type of sides are available with the meals. Didn't help she was incredibly young for a waitress and obivously new. Felt like she was let down by improper training by management. 2. We got water spilt all over us. We actually felt really bad that she spilt the water and helped her clean it up with a mop. 3. Food was surprisingly good. Burritos were made well and my girlfriends steak was well cooked. Seems more like bar that happens to be a restaurant than a restaurant that has a bar, kinda thing. 4. Awkward old couple sitting next us were complaining about every little thing. Was pretty entertaining to watch the stammer, "No, no, no." Overall it was an interesting experience but one I will never forget at El Patron.

So we went here for our weekend vacation to mammoth, naturally. We chose this over the other Mexican joint because the kid doesn't like Mexican and they serve breakfast all day. After getting there and reviewing the food on others tables and the atmosphere, we wanted to leave. Stayed and regretted it because reviews to the other Mexican spot were so much better. Also looks like a junk yard in the back. Rice seemed like minute rice to me with no seasoning

The restaurant is clean! However, let me share with everyone why it's not so great! 1. The waitress asked if I wanted lime in my Margarita. 2. Waitress was clueless about menu. 3. Menu appeared more American fare than Mexican. 4. Salsa for chips and salsa came out HOT-like temperature HOT. Tasted like grandma's stewed tomatoes. Threw the lime from my margarita in to give it flavor. 5. Have these people ever been to Mexico, any part?! Shoot, Tiajuana will count at this point. I make better Mexican food in my uber American home kitchen. 6. Had to use EVERY condiment on the table top to create a meal I could even fathom eating. Bottom line, keep on driving!

Was alright. Ordered the breakfast plate with steak and eggs for dinner. The meat kind of tasted old but I didn't get a stomache later so maybe it was just me. I really liked the tortillas that came as a side (not in picture). They have karaoke. Did not love the place; did not think it was horrible. DIRECTIONS: If you want the exact address of this restaurant on a map, type "El Patron Family Restaurant" on Google maps (the location that Google map and Yelp show is 1-2 blocks off)

This place was great for a small restaurant. Vacationed to see the caves and stopped in. The service was quick and food tasted good especially for the price and the portions were generous,. the restaurant was clean, and family oriented they had a karaoke night which was a good time for everyone. I would definitely go here again.

If you love horrible service, bad food, and getting in fights with the staff you will love this place. Yes, we explained to them that the food was not prepared to order and we were told we were wrong. Then they yelled at us, slammed my friend to the ground. They called the cops , which told us this wasn't the first time. Stay away!

For dinner on our fourth night of vacation, we wanted Mexican, so we picked El Patron, which was pretty close to our hotel. It was about 7pm when we arrived, and most of the dinner rush was over, but it still took several minutes to be shown to a table. The table itself was a large, round table next to the windows. Combined with the awesome ambiance of the restaurant's old fashioned hardwood floors, we were excited about having a super supper! Dinner was certainly 'super' something. While our waitress was super nice, she was also super clueless, and kept forgetting things, even after we explicitly asked for them ("I ordered this with a side of guacamole, right?" or "sorry, it was actually a refill of diet I requested"). The free chips and salsa were nice, but the salsa was super bland, and tasted like the lackluster, store-brand stuff you used to buy back in college when you ran out of money between paychecks. Once our orders finally arrived, personally I felt that my barbacoa was super tasty, but when we asked our kids how their food was, one shrugged her shoulders, one said "it was not *bad*," and the third simply replied "meh." My wife, however, was less ambiguous: she said her enchilada was super tasteless. However when the bill finally came (I had to ask twice), I was super surprised that dinner with tax was only $48 for the five of us. Even though we really liked the restaurant's great atmosphere, tasty barbacoa, and good prices, it could not really make up for the inept service or otherwise universally bland food. As such I rate El Patron as being OK, and might or might not come back.

I don't know why the reviews of this place are so poor. My family and I had a very good experience. It looks a little like a dive but the food was fantastic. I had the pork tacos with pineapple chutney. Very good. The waitress was very friendly. When we first arrived, there were no tables available outside, but when one opened up, she and the hostess helped move us outside.

The taste was pretty standard straight-from-a-can which could be worse, I suppose. The two bigger issues were that (1) the waitress couldn't answer a question about the menu and (2) when I asked for meat-free burrito I was treated with contempt. I get that rural America hasn't embraced a healthier plant-based diet, but, I'm trying to buy your food--don't dissuade me! Otherwise, it was sort of what I expected going into it.

Had lunch after a cave tour. My family was starving. They brought out chips and salsa. The salsa was terrible, it was served steaming hot. It seems they took tomato paste and threw in some onions and heated it up and called it salsa. All of our food was bland and tasteless. Worst Mexican food I have EVER had. Disgusting!!!!!!!!

Stopped for lunch near Mammoth Cave, KY. Worst Mexican Restaurant ever. Salads drenched in water, enough salt in the salsa to shut your arteries down. Service sucked as well. Felt like we were in a Gordan Ramsey Kitchen Nightmare episode.

I was so shocked at how good the food was. The menu has basically everything, so you'll have no problem finding something that looks good, only difficulty is choosing what! Service was nice and everything was fairly priced, if not totally inexpensive.

Food is decent. Service is absolutely terrible. Menu is nondescript, such as the ounce isn't specified on orders like steak, the ingredients in your burrito aren't listed, only your meat options. The waitress knew absolutely nothing, and when asked to specialize the order (ex. No sour cream and cheese, thanks lactose intolerance) she said you'll be fine and walked away. Got exactly what I didn't want and had to get the manager because the waitress didn't want to deal with me ordering food how I like it. I thought this was a restaurant, not my mothers cooking. No one checked on me until they brought the bill. My water glass sat empty for 30 some minutes, and never got refilled. It was dead in there (wonder why?) so I couldn't even flag her down. She tried to take my plate before I was even finished. It was clear I was bothersome to her because I was making her actually do her job rather than sit around on Facebook while enjoying hourly wage. I've honestly gotten better service at a McDonald's drive through. I've had some crappy waitress experiences in the past, but this be was so bad I can't even remember the other ones currently. If you ever get the redhead waitress, request someone else right off the bat.

We ate here after an expedition at Mammoth Cave. We initially chose this restaurant because they served alcohol. Between the 8 people eating we had a rather good sampling of every type of food on the menu. Everyone ate all their food and really liked it. I had a steak burrito and it was filling and delicious. If you are in Cave City, definitely eat here!

This is the worst restaurant I've ever been to. In a "moist" county they're one of two places that serves alcohol and they do karaoke on weekends, so they stay in business, but the food is literally inedible. They have a $5 food order rule if you want to order more than two drinks. I got a burrito with mole sauce. The burrito part was gross but barely edible (gristly meat, under-cooked beans) but the mole was so incredibly bitter that it almost had a chemical taste to it. I have never sent food back at a restaurant in my life, but I could not eat more than two bites of this without feeling sick. I (politely) let the server know when he asked how it was, and then picked at my dining companion's underwhelming plate. When it came time to pay, they still charged me $3 for my dinner! I don't consider a night ruined by bad food, I was very nice about the issues with the food, and still left a good tip, but I would rather have pop tarts and whiskey for dinner by the Econo Lodge pool than go back to El Patron.

Better off going elsewhere. The food was just tolerable. The cigarette smoke was terrible. I saved my chicken for the dog and she didn't even like it. Way too salty too.

We stopped here after touring Mammoth Cave. We ordered two specials. The pork burrito was delicious. The salsa was chunky and spicy. The Mexican beer was on draft. The service was quick. The cost was very reasonable.

Never been a fan of El Patron, but it is close to our hotel. The Salsa that comes with the chips is terrible, but I played it safe and just ordered beef taco's and given a long day travel the meal was fine. If looking for fine dinning keep looking, for a quick meal and a strong drink the place is fine.

Much better than I expected, but then my standards were quite low after a lolng day traveling and the remote location.

I'd be surprised to see this place in business for another month. It's commonplace in middle America for Mexican restaurants to 'take over' vacated steakhouses, fast food, and various other buildings. El Patron inhabits a continually failing restaurant location attached so a scary budget motel. The place was a ghost town. Every TV was turned off. Unfortunately, the owners were confused with the type of food to sell, so they gave it a Mexican name and mixed in 20% Mexican entrees to a confusing and overwhelming menu. Imagine mixing a cracker barrel breakfast offering, Chipotle's, Arby's, a BBQ shack, and Fudrucker's all rolled up into one. Warm tomato soup was served with chips; we're assuming it was their version of 'salsa'. Our table ordered a T-bone, omelet, chimichanga, mushroom swiss burger, a boiling bowl of chicken (still have no clue), and kids chicken nuggets. Nothing made sense, everything was awful and bland. For example, the burger was pre-formed, chimichanga was cold, T-bone had no seasoning... on and on. But the BEST of all was a refill on my iced tea. I guess they ran out, so I was served iced COFFEE. I guess they thought we wouldn't notice. My wife and I have both had digestive issues for days. Stay away. Far, far away.

Had taco salad. It was okay, but wouldn't come back for another one. Have to wait & see how the meals effect us.

11/25/2012 I was one of a party of three on a loooong road trip: one meat & potato person, one omnivore, one vegan (me). Finding a place right off of a random highway exit where we can all find decent food is exceedingly rare. El Patron succeeded. The meat-eater's Club Sandwich and the omnivore's chicken enchilada were both very good. Our server didn't know the word vegan, but she readily listed the ingredients of every dish that I asked about. So even I cobbled together a meal that I liked. The guacamole and chips were generous and fresh and had a good texture. The mild salsa was reminiscent of a hearty tomato soup, so I added the remainder to my Spanish Rice to create an even heartier (though lukewarm, of course) rice & tomato soup. For dessert, the omnivore and I shared a huge sopapilla (I just ate around the enormous scoop of ice cream). They also happily filled the travel mug with coffee. We all left well-fed and happy. Good job, El Patron!!

My friend and I had a late lunch here. The place was clean and easy to find. Lovely wood floor. Very few diners, which made me nervous, but it was around 2 PM and my friend came back from the restroom, she said "they just told me it's new." This recently-opened Mexican/American restaurant has a serious rival very nearby, El Mazatlan. Both are very good. El Patron has a chimichanga that is HUGE. I could only eat 3/4 of it. The food was very fresh and the chips were crispy. I love Mexican food and this place had some wonderful choices that were not your "standard fare." Tilapia, barbecue, enchiladas with mole sauce, etc. Oh, I just learned they open at 7 AM - so must be good for breakfast, too. Fast friendly service -- do not know what it's like when it gets crowded, but for now, Highly Recommended.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
